Vol. 1 - Ch. 286 - When Night Falls, Close Your Eyes
This realm posed little threat to them, and their seamless coordination allowed them to fight in perfect harmony. However, the Shi Clan had many warriors, and their movements quickly drew attention. Two Shi fighters immediately broke away from the chaos and pressed toward Chen Qinghe and Chen Qingmeng.
Both were late-stage Body Tempering cultivators. If they clashed head on, Chen Qinghe and Chen Qingmeng would have no chance of winning.
Realizing they had provoked stronger foes, the two did not hesitate; they turned and fled at once.
Yet, even as they retreated, they hurled the small stones they carried at the Shi warriors still locked in battle.
The stones carried little force, but the insult was immense. In the blink of an eye, two more Body Tempering warriors joined the pursuit.
Now hunted by four, the pair dared not act recklessly. They bolted straight toward the inner grounds of their family estate.
On the eve of battle, Chen Xingzhen had warned the younger clansmen that if they encountered an opponent they could not defeat, they must never act recklessly. They should avoid combat if possible because survival was the priority.
After all, the youths were not highly skilled. Even with the Five Viscera Ascension Technique, they would not be very powerful.
Yet Chen Qinghe and Chen Qingmeng were determined. "Even if we flee, we must ease the burden on our clansmen."
By drawing four enemies to themselves, they lightened the pressure on the others.
With their familiarity with the family grounds and the aid of Shadow Step, the pursuers could not catch up to the two evasive experts immediately.
Not far outside the Chen compound, Shi Pojing watched the battle unfold. He turned to the elder beside him and asked,
"Ancestor Uncle, should I make a move as well?"
Shi Hezhang shook his head.
"No need. Just watch from here. The Chen family’s totem is about to act.”
Upon hearing this, a trace of anticipation revealed itself on Shi Pojing’s face.
Although he had visited Chaotic Burial Mountain several times, he had never seen the Chen family’s totem in action. Now, at last, he would see what made this incense-born totem different from the ancestral totems of other clans.
As the two gazed intently, changes stirred within the Chen compound.
The clansmen were forced to retreat as countless green light points suddenly burst forth from beneath the ground!
This abrupt phenomenon caused the nearby Shi warriors to grow cautious and wary, momentarily dividing their attention as they braced for the unexpected.
In stark contrast, the Chen clansmen were overjoyed, their voices rising in ecstatic cries.
"Divine Tree! The Divine Tree has taken action!"
"Everyone, absorb it quickly!"
Having experienced this once before, the Chen clansmen were far more adept this time. Without hesitation, they began absorbing the green light.
As the radiance entered their bodies, the wounds from the fierce battle began to heal at an astonishing speed.
Even their shattered organs were reborn at that very moment!
Though the newly regrown organs could not be detonated again, they gave the Chen clansmen boundless courage.
Backed by the Divine Tree, they feared nothing.
Green light continued to surge endlessly from beneath the earth, soon enveloping every Chen warrior engaged in battle.
At first, the Shi clansmen hesitated, wary of the strange glow. But when they realized the light was harmless, they attacked with renewed ferocity.
Yet, the ensuing clash left them deeply unsettled.
A blade would barely cut into flesh before the wound healed, the injury vanishing as if it had never existed.
A fist would tear through skin, only for the flesh to knit itself back together in the next heartbeat.
This terrifying speed of regeneration made the Shi warriors' eyes burn red with frustration.
The Chen clansmen were like indestructible cockroaches at that moment—willing to endure injury and even gamble their lives so long as they could strike back.
At that moment, the Chen Clan surged to its peak, while the once fierce Shi Clan offensive faltered and showed signs of being overwhelmed.
“Uncle Ancestor, is this the Chen family’s Totem Power? Truly formidable!”
Not far away, Shi Pojing stared at the “green ocean” ahead. His voice was filled with astonishment.
Shi Hezhang frowned slightly and chose not to answer. Yet, as he continued to gaze at the scene before him, a trace of doubt stirred in his heart.
Though his clan lacked an Incense Totem, he was far from ignorant of its mysteries. In fact, the Shi Clan had once conducted research on such totems, uncovering their peculiar traits.
However, according to what I know, an Incense Totem should not possess divine powers, such as regenerating severed limbs or reviving flesh upon bare bones.
Even if such abilities exist, the consumption of incense energy would be immense. Rather than squandering precious incense on low-ranked clansmen, wouldn't it be more effective to manifest the totem's projection and unleash its divine might directly on the enemy?
Could his judgment have been wrong? The incense projection they had seen earlier was no illusion.
Shi Hezhang sank into deep thought. His intention to intervene personally slowly faded, replaced by the decision to wait and observe a little longer.
After all, even if the Chen clan truly possessed the divine power to revive the dead, the Shi Clan still held an absolute advantage in numbers and cultivation levels.
At the center of the battlefield, the Shi Clan warriors, having adapted to the strange phenomenon, steadied themselves and launched a counterattack.
Meanwhile, two of the Shi Clan’s Innate Realm martial artists, with no opponents to restrain them, struck without hesitation amidst the crowd.
With just a casual move, a Chen clansman was sent flying, grievously wounded.
In the next instant, however, the same clansman crawled back out of the "green ocean," as if his injuries were nothing more than an itch.
This sight caused the Innate Realm experts to furrow their brows.
Yet, as seasoned martial artists with sharp eyes, they quickly adjusted their tactics, directing their strikes toward their foes' heads and hearts.
Though troublesome, the results were undeniable.
In no time, several Chen clan members perished at the hands of the two Innate Realm experts. Not even the ocean-like green light could raise them back to their feet!
Seeing that the Divine Tree could not reverse the dire situation, and with more and more clansmen falling, Chen Xingzhen’s expression grew grim.
At this rate, the clan might be beyond salvation.
Yet, when Chen Xingzhen lifted his gaze toward the darkened sky and glanced at the ancestral hall, hope and anticipation lit his face.
The night was silent and heavy with desolation.
As the casualties mounted, countless shadows silently drifted above the heads of the Shi clansmen.
“Strike!”
With that soundless command, dozens of armored figures suddenly appeared overhead!
In the next instant, these long-prepared shadows launched their assault on the enemy below.
The Shi clansmen had no time to sense the looming danger above their heads—they were struck by injuries one after another!
Some of the less fortunate martial artists were cut down outright by the armored figures’ locust leaf blades because they were unable to dodge in time.
"Ahhh!"
The battlefield echoed with screams as many Shi clansmen fell lifelessly to the ground.
"Damn it!"
"What are these things?"
The sudden emergence of the shadows threw the Shi warriors into a panic. Watching the figures drift effortlessly through the air only deepened their fear.
Only martial artists of the Qi Manipulation Realm could soar through the skies, after all. Could all these shadows be Chen Clan experts of that realm?
But that’s far too many!
