Chapter 30 Jinghua University
Chapter 30 Jinghua University
Fifteen minutes later.
Director Wang hung up the phone, his face covered in sweat, his hand trembling as he held the phone.
Director Li sneered from the side, "Old Wang, didn't Old Zhang hit you on the head over the phone with his cane? He's the kind of person who can't tolerate anything wrong, and he hates anything linked to exam scores and scientific research. If you told him a high school student wanted the highest level of access to a supercomputer, wouldn't he have cursed you out?"
Director Wang ignored him and quickly walked up to Lin Yu.
"Academician Zhang agreed."
Director Li's sneer froze on his face: "Impossible!"
Director Wang looked at Lin Yu with an extremely complex expression, as if he were looking at an incomprehensible monster.
"Academician Zhang originally intended to hang up the phone directly. But I sent the manuscript that your mayor faxed over—the Casimir effect modified model that you deduced at the winter camp—to his email address."
Director Wang swallowed hard.
"Academician Zhang watched for a minute and only said one sentence."
Lin Yu raised an eyebrow: "What are you saying?"
He said the model was wrong. But it was wrong in a way that was ahead of its time.
Director Wang's tone was dry. "So, he wants you to go directly to his lab when school starts. He'll give you access to the computing power. But if you can't produce something he deems worthwhile within three months, he'll personally kick you out of Jinghua."
Lin Yu smiled.
He tugged at the corners of his mouth, revealing a cold, emotionless smile.
This is the kind of opponent and platform he wants.
"Pen."
Lin Yu extended his hand.
Director Wang quickly handed over a pen.
Lin Yu opened the agreement from Jinghua University, didn't even glance at the clauses regarding scholarships and benefits, and went straight to the last page, where he signed his name in a flamboyant manner.
He then handed the pen to Xia Zijin.
Xia Zijing took the pen and signed her name on another special recruitment agreement.
"Old Wang, you win."
Director Li looked at the two effective agreements, sighed deeply, and turned to leave.
The principal was so excited he almost fainted. Jiangcheng No. 1 High School produced two students admitted to prestigious universities in Beijing in one year, and one of them was an unprecedented perfect scorer. This achievement was enough for him to boast about until retirement.
"Lin Yu, Xia Zijin. See you in Beijing on September 1st."
Director Wang carefully put the agreement into his briefcase, holding it like a rare treasure. "As for the lab workstations you requested, I will arrange everything before the start of the semester."
Everyone's gone.
The villa returned to quiet.
Lin Yu picked up the can of cola, which was no longer very cold.
Why choose a theoretical physics lab?
Xia Zijing put down her backpack and pulled out a chair to sit down. She knew very well that Lin Yu didn't care about the forefront of physics at all; he was just a player who manipulated rules and numbers at will.
Lin Yu took a sip of cola, the sweet carbonation exploding on his tongue.
"Because only supercomputing clusters focusing on basic theoretical disciplines have the most vulnerabilities and the highest rate of idle computing power."
Lin Yu said calmly, "In commercial or applied science labs, every line of code requires layers of approval. Right under Zhang Chengzhi's nose, I was able to secretly divert at least 30% of the computing power to build my own underlying architecture."
Xia Zijing pushed up glasses that weren't actually on her nose, her fingers pausing for a moment.
"You're taking advantage of a national key laboratory."
"This is called optimal resource allocation."
Lin Yu precisely tossed the empty soda can into a trash can three meters away. "Let's go buy two high-spec, lightweight laptops. We're going to Beijing in September."
……
Early September, Beijing.
The tree-lined paths of Jinghua Garden were bustling with new students. Large bags of luggage and parents seeing them off made the roads extremely crowded.
Lin Yu and Xia Zijin dragged their minimalist carry-on suitcases, as if they were in a parallel universe, completely detached from the surrounding hustle and bustle.
Lin Yu was still wearing a plain black T-shirt without any logos, with an old school uniform with the zipper open over it. He had one hand in his pocket and stood in a relaxed posture.
Xia Zijin walked side by side, her bare face and fair skin, her perfect figure attracting the frequent glances of countless freshmen and seniors along the way.
Under the physics department's welcome tent, several second- and third-year students were chatting.
"I heard that this year's top scorer with a perfect score of 750 rejected all the popular majors and was specially admitted to our physics department by Academician Zhang?"
"So what if you got a perfect score? That's just the pinnacle of high school exam preparation. At Peking University, especially under Professor Zhang, where you focus on pure theory, you rely on talent and creativity. Test-takers won't last more than half a semester here."
A young man in a bespoke shirt and a Patek Philippe watch on his wrist sat in the center, casually twirling a pen in his hand. He was handsome and exuded an air of elite superiority.
Gu Feiyu.
A native of Beijing, he was the top scorer in his province a few years ago and is now a star sophomore at the Institute for Interdisciplinary Information Sciences (Yao Class), as well as a teaching assistant for several important projects in the Department of Physics. Behind him stands a deep family network and a circle of senior alumni in Beijing.
"It's just test-taking skills."
Gu Feiyu smiled faintly, "If someone works through the same high school syllabus exam for three years and gets a perfect score, it only proves that he's a perfect problem-solving machine. When it comes to actually building mathematical models to solve unknown problems, his computational power will instantly collapse."
As they were talking, Lin Yu and Xia Zijin arrived at the Physics Department's welcome tent.
"Lin Yu. Reporting for duty."
His voice was cool and calm, without a single unnecessary word.
The noise under the shed came to an abrupt halt. All eyes turned to Lin Yu, and then gasped in amazement at Xia Zijing beside him.
The senior student in charge of registration frantically pulled out the forms: "You...you're the top scorer with a perfect score of 750?"
"Um."
Gu Feiyu stopped twirling his pen. He stood up, walked to Lin Yu, and looked down at this legendary figure. No designer labels, a lazy air about him, and not even a glance was directed at him.
"Junior Lin Yu, I've heard so much about you."
Gu Feiyu extended his hand, his smile warm yet laced with cunning. "I am Gu Feiyu, a sophomore in the Yao Class. I will also be your teaching assistant for the Basic Modeling course in the Physics Department."
Lin Yu glanced at his outstretched hand, but didn't shake it. He simply put one hand in his pocket and looked at him indifferently.
Gu Feiyu wasn't embarrassed. He naturally withdrew his hand, his tone carrying a hint of condescending advice: "Jinghua is not a high school. 750 points only represents your past. In Academician Zhang's laboratory, even if you can recite high school physics common sense perfectly, if you lack the ability to build underlying logic from scratch, you will be eliminated instantly. I suggest you put away that arrogance of a top scorer and spend more time reshaping your way of thinking."
The surrounding senior students nodded in agreement, their eyes gleaming with a sense of superiority born of experience. In the eyes of top students in Beijing, out-of-province exam champions often lacked genuine research talent. Gu Feiyu's rebuke felt more like a warning.
Xia Zijing stood to the side, looking at Gu Feiyu as if he were mentally challenged. She was about to retort with physical constants when Lin Yu interrupted her.
Lin Yu looked up from the registration form, and his gaze finally lingered on Gu Feiyu's face for a second.
"You just said that you're in the Yao Class, and at the same time, you're working as a teaching assistant in the Physics Department?"
Lin Yu asked.
"That's right."
Gu Feiyu raised his chin slightly, "Interdisciplinary studies are the future trend. I participated in two of Academician Zhang's peripheral projects..."
"Your time management is very unreasonable."
Lin Yu interrupted him, his tone still as calm as if stating a theorem, "The core of interdisciplinary studies is the unification of underlying mathematical logic, not flitting between two departments like a butterfly. The fact that you even take on teaching assistant positions for basic modeling courses proves that you don't have access to core computing power in your core projects."
Lin Yu took the registration form and turned to walk towards the dormitory area.
"The real geniuses are all vying for computing power; only idle people are here acting as life mentors."
A casual remark, like a perfectly timed slap, landed squarely on Gu Feiyu's face without a single swear word.
Gu Feiyu's warm smile froze instantly. The surrounding air turned to freezing.
Watching Lin Yu's relaxed departing figure, a deep shadow of gloom flashed in Gu Feiyu's eyes.
He had been praised in Beijing's social circles for two years, with even professors commending him for his social skills and exceptional talent. When did it become the turn of a newly enrolled out-of-town test-taker to lecture him?
