From Apocalypse Boss to Farmer: My Vegetables Make Me Stronger!

Chapter 416 - 401: Chef Mi

Chapter 416 - 401: Chef Mi

Life is hard in the apocalypse, and food is especially precious.

To be honest, isn’t the main reason most people are still going these days just for their next meal?

At Qi Xiang’s question, even the Qin sisters couldn’t help but look over, their gazes tinged with uncertainty.

"Then you’d better not eat any later." Wei Heng, on the other hand, was quite confident in himself. He dangled the cured meat Gu Xi had just brought out, then turned and handed it to the smiling chef.

"No way." Qi Xiang sauntered over, staring at the golden cured meat and fighting the urge to drool. "I have to give the chef some face, don’t I?"

Wei Heng gave a few deadpan sneers and walked over to the busy chef. Seeing this, Qi Xiang followed him. "Are you trying to steal his secrets?"

"Steal what secrets?" Wei Heng retorted irritably. ’I’m learning from him fair and square, okay?’

’Can’t you see the chef is more than happy to teach me?’

Seeing how seriously Wei Heng was studying, Qi Xiang watched for a moment before growing bored and walking away. The main reason was... well, even though she loved to eat, what beauty enjoys the smell of greasy smoke?

It had to be said, Qi Xiang was very protective of her "great beauty" image.

The cured meat had just come out of the pan when Shen Yue, following the scent, arrived.

Seeing him covered in dust, Qi Xiang pointed disdainfully at a nearby water bucket.

"Why are you by yourself?" she asked, keeping her distance. "Where’s Yang Chi?"

Shen Yue replied, "Ye Junhan called him over to help."

Hearing this, Qi Xiang’s eyes darted. "Ye Junhan isn’t coming?" ’That doesn’t seem right.’

"He’s busy." Seemingly finding it too much trouble to explain, Shen Yue just dumped a bucket of water over his head and gave a vague reply.

After using a gust of wind to dry himself off, he ambled over to Gu Xi. "Got any booze?"

’It’s not every day we get a good meal. How can we not have a drink?’

Gu Xi pulled a case of beer from her dimensional space, then, after a moment’s thought, produced a large bottle of cola as well.

Qi Xiang happily took the cola and hugged it to her chest, her eyes locking onto the empty bucket in Shen Yue’s hand.

As fellow foodies, Shen Yue understood instantly. He sent the bucket flying over with a casual gust of wind. Qi Xiang gave him a satisfied look. Deciding she might as well kill two birds with one stone, she turned to Gu Xi and asked, "And some crushed ice."

Once the ice-cold beer and cola were ready, the chef began to serve the food.

It had to be said, a pro is a pro.

Shen Yue and the others ate until their faces were slick with grease. Even Qi Xiang forgot about her "great beauty" image; the speed at which she wielded her chopsticks was nearly a match for Shen Yue’s.

After Qi Xiang snatched another piece of cured meat from him, Wei Heng suddenly looked up at her and asked blankly, "So, is my cured meat worthy of the chef’s skill?"

Qi Xiang pushed aside some banana pith on the plate, gracefully picked up a piece of the cured meat, and shot him an elegant glare. "A man shouldn’t be so petty. Be careful, or you’ll never find a wife."

Wei Heng: "..."

Just then, Gu Xi suddenly asked Shen Yue, "What are your plans for Mr. Mi?"

Mr. Mi had already left after serving all the dishes.

Hearing Gu Xi suddenly bring him up, Qi Xiang and the others paused, stunned for a moment. ’What plans could there be for a chef? Isn’t his job just to cook?’

But judging by Shen Yue’s expression... Qi Xiang silently put down her chopsticks and picked up her iced cola.

Wei Heng, however, was quick to catch on. Although Shen Yue ate a lot, he wasn’t actually a picky eater. He was just forced by the state of the world to have a huge appetite.

’So why would he need to keep a personal chef around?’

Shen Yue swirled the beer in his hand. "Before the apocalypse, the primary backer of the Milin Restaurant, where Mr. Mi used to work, had the surname Gu..."

Gu Xi’s eyes shot up. "The Gu Family?"

"The very same," Shen Yue confirmed, taking a sip of his cold beer.

"Recently, Yang Chi dug up some pre-apocalypse information. The Gu Family controlled nearly all of the tourism, food and beverage, real estate, and transportation industries..."

The sudden outbreak of the apocalypse caused such a chaotic period that much of that data is now lost, especially records of the Gu Family’s hidden, illicit operations. But what has been uncovered is already staggering.

It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say their wealth could rival that of a nation.

And as it happened, this Mr. Mi that Shen Yue found had once met one of the heads of the Gu Family.

That was one of the reasons Shen Yue brought him along.

As for the other reason...

"According to Mr. Mi’s recollection, just days before the apocalypse, someone from ’on high’ used the restaurant’s supply channels to suddenly take away a huge amount of ingredients..." Shen Yue picked up his chopsticks, pushed aside the garnishes on the plate, and snagged the last piece of cured meat.

Gu Xi’s grip on her chopsticks tightened. ’With control over the food and transport industries, it would have been easy for the Gu Family to hoard supplies if they had foreknowledge. But... the apocalypse was supposed to be a surprise. How did the Gu Family get tipped off?’

Gu Xi thought of her birth mother. She thought of the Superpower Seed she had been holding in her hand when she was born. She calmly lifted the cola in front of her and took a small sip.

It was Qi Xiang who asked, "Did you seek this information out, or did you only notice Mr. Mi after he let something slip unintentionally?"

"What’s the difference?" Shen Yue stuffed the cured meat into his mouth, then raised his beer again and clinked it against Gu Xi’s glass. "Whether this information was leaked to us intentionally or not, one thing is clear: it looks like the Gu Family is getting antsy..."

’That’s true.’

Qi Xiang mused, ’Looks like the Gu Family is planning to make the first move.’

Across from them, Shen Yue took a swig of beer, let out a contented burp, and added, "These past few days, Liu Bo has come looking for me several times..."

Seeing Gu Xi look his way, he put down his glass and leaned back in his chair. "All about the Gu Family."

Liu Bo seems intent on separating the Liu Family’s remaining influence here in City A from the Gu Family, to draw a clear line between them.

By the looks of it, he’s even ready to abandon his so-called uncle.

’A ruthless man, indeed.’

Shen Yue continued, "Liu Bo said that while the Gu and Liu families are related by marriage, they haven’t had much contact over the years. It’s only in the past year or so that the Gu Family has suddenly become more active..."

And it was also a year ago that Mr. Mi arrived at A City Base.

Gu Xi lowered her gaze, her eyes landing on the shattered ice in her glass. She swirled it absently before bringing it to her lips, tilting her head back, and downing it in one go.

She calmly chewed on the ice, letting the chill slowly spread through her mouth.

After a long moment.

She picked up her chopsticks again, selected a piece of banana pith, and looked up calmly at Shen Yue. "Mr. Mi’s culinary skills are truly excellent."

Shen Yue smiled and held out his bowl. "They certainly are," he agreed.

The piece of food on Gu Xi’s chopsticks landed steadily in Shen Yue’s bowl.

"Tsk." Qi Xiang, who had been listening to their conversation, swirled the cola in her glass. When the others looked over, she casually flicked her long hair.

"The Gu Family really is as rich and powerful as they say, with talent to spare. All these years into the apocalypse, and they can still afford to send a superpowered chef our way."

You have to remember, ordinary people have struggled just to get enough to eat during the apocalypse. But the Gu Family? Who knows how many resources they’ve hoarded or how many capable people they support. Now they can even sacrifice a superpowered chef just to pass along a message.

This one instance was a clear testament to the Gu Family’s immense wealth and deep-seated power.

"While the rich feast on wine and meat, the poor starve to death on the streets." Qin Yi gripped her chopsticks and let out a heavy sigh. "This world is so unfair..."

Even before the apocalypse, data showed that ninety percent of the world’s wealth was in the hands of just one percent of the population.

And the Gu Family was clearly at the very top of that one percent.

Having hoarded so many resources, of course they were living comfortably in the apocalypse. But who knew how many lives had been sacrificed for that comfort?

Qi Xiang glanced at Gu Xi beside her but ultimately decided not to say anything more.

Gu Xi slowly chewed the crushed ice, her gaze fixed on the distance. In that moment, no one knew what she was thinking...
