Chapter 115 Too Much Money May Be a Curse
Chapter 115 Too Much Money May Be a Curse
Han Weiping personally went to greet them; the proper etiquette in official circles must be observed.
Cai Xilian's face was gloomy, as if he wanted to devour someone.
"Director Han, what do you mean? My wife wasn't driving, why are you arresting her?"
Han Weiping smiled ingratiatingly, "Director Cai, it's a misunderstanding, a misunderstanding. We just wanted to ask your wife to come back to assist with the investigation."
Cai Xilian persisted, and the arrest of the wife of the deputy director of customs was a slap in the face for him.
"Investigate what? Even if a traffic accident needs an investigation, it's the traffic police's responsibility. What right do you have to arrest people? Who arrested them? Bring him out here!"
Qi Tongwei stepped forward, grinning, "Deputy Chief Cai, I'm the one who arrested him. My name is Qi Tongwei."
Cai Xilian immediately remembered the name. This kid caused a scene at the TV station and even beat up Deputy Director Chang. He's currently under investigation for a smuggling-murder case, so we have to be careful.
Cai Xilian pointed at Qi Tongwei and said, "Then tell me, what gives you the right to arbitrarily arrest people? Who gave you the authority to abuse law enforcement?"
Qi Tongwei smiled and said, "Deputy Chief Cai, the driver hit someone and wanted to get out to help, but your wife told him to flee the scene so she could play mahjong. Tell me, which is more important, a human life or a game of mahjong?"
The police officers watching the commotion gasped in shock. How could they stand by and watch someone die just to play mahjong? It was outrageous!
Cai Xilian knew his wife loved playing mahjong, so he was perfectly capable of doing something like this.
"Don't make baseless accusations. What evidence do you have?"
Qi Tongwei smiled. "Deputy Chief Cai, you underestimate our police station. Here, everyone must tell the truth. Confess and you'll be treated leniently; resist and you'll be punished severely."
Cai Xilian knew that continuing to talk would probably not bring him any advantage, and might even make him more embarrassed.
"Director Han, may I take my wife with me now?"
Han Weiping gave Qi Tongwei a thumbs up, saying, "Good lad, I knew you had a way."
"Director Cai, please wait a moment. I'll have someone bring your wife out right away."
The two policewomen quickly ran towards the interrogation room.
Qi Tongwei walked up to Cai Xilian and said, "Deputy Director Cai, there's an old saying that a virtuous wife brings less trouble to her husband. In this new society, we absolutely cannot tolerate such disregard for human life. You'd better keep a close eye on your wife."
Cai Xilian was furious that he had been taught a lesson by a mere policeman.
"Kid, it's none of your business how my family does things. You'd better know your place."
Qi Tongwei chuckled, "Deputy Director Cai, everyone is equal before the law. Don't let your long tenure in a high position breed bureaucratic airs and make you forget to serve the people."
Cai Xilian's fists hardened. This kid dared to talk to him like that; he was simply lawless.
Immediately, the noblewoman came running out, sobbing.
"Old Cai, you have to stand up for me! This kid hit me and even stuffed a stinky rag in my mouth!"
Cai Xilian was even more furious after his wife suffered such a great injustice.
"Director Han, this kid, as a police officer, actually broke the law. Shouldn't you give me an explanation?"
"How can I let my superiors get involved in something I did myself?" Qi Tongwei chuckled. "Deputy Chief Cai, why don't you go to the interrogation room and check where your wife is injured?"
Cai Xilian's face darkened considerably, as if a storm cloud had descended upon him.
"Tell me, did he hit you or not?"
Cai Xilian's wife is named Ding Meiyu. She loved dressing up when she was young and she's still active now that she's older.
"Old Cai, he shoved a stinky rag into my mouth, I almost suffocated."
Qi Tongwei chuckled. "That's because your mouth is so foul; you cursed every inch of my ancestors, so I had no choice but to shut you up."
"Old Cai, he's talking nonsense. I never cursed his ancestors for eighteen generations. He's wronging me."
Ding Meiyu panicked. She hadn't actually cursed Qi Tongwei's ancestors for eighteen generations, but who would believe that?
Qi Tongwei looked completely innocent. "If you hadn't insulted me, if you had cooperated with the police, would I have done that? I'm not crazy."
"Old Cai, I really didn't curse his ancestors for eighteen generations."
Ding Meiyu was stuck on this because she had been wronged, and she knew what it felt like to wrongly accuse someone.
Cai Xilian couldn't stand it anymore; now it was just a dog-eat-dog situation.
"Director Han, you should really keep a close eye on your man. I hope he'll behave himself. Let's go."
Cai Xilian pulled Ding Meiyu away. Now Han Weiping was clearly biased towards Qi Tongwei, so nothing he said mattered, especially since the power of law enforcement was in Han's hands.
Qi Tongwei shouted, "Deputy Director Cai, the victim is lying in the hospital, and I even paid for his medical expenses. Remember to pay me back!"
Cai Xilian pulled his wife into the car and drove away without looking back.
Han Weiping called Qi Tongwei into his office and asked, "What do you plan to do?"
"Director Han, this case is getting more and more complicated now, and we're worried about leaks."
"You suspect that someone in the police department has been bribed?"
Qi Tongwei nodded. "That possibility cannot be ruled out. Smuggling is not something that ordinary people can handle; it will inevitably involve government officials, and where there are officials, there are bound to be their underlings."
Han Weiping agreed with this assessment, asking, "Do you believe Deputy Director Cai is involved?"
"Director Han, look at the jade bracelet on his wife's wrist and the pearl necklace around her neck. They're obviously very valuable. And her bag is an LV, which is a luxury item from abroad, costing tens of thousands of yuan. Even if it's not involved in smuggling, it's probably still considered corruption."
Han Weiping noticed that Ding Meiyu did indeed have the air of a wealthy woman. "It's best to be cautious," he said. "Perhaps Deputy Customs Chief Cai has relatives overseas."
"Of course, this possibility cannot be ruled out, which requires more trustworthy comrades to investigate."
Han Weiping understood what Qi Tongwei meant. He was currently at odds with the criminal police captain, Cui Yong, and was not fully utilizing the police station's maximum potential.
"You should continue your investigation. I'll have a serious talk with Cui Yong."
"Okay, Director Han."
When Ding Meiyu returned home, she immediately dialed the phone number of Ding Xiangqun, the cousin of the director of the Xipu branch.
"Brother, I was bullied today and even handcuffed and taken to the police station. You have to help me get revenge!"
"Sis, who's so bold? Tell me, what's his name?"
Ding Meiyu gritted her teeth in hatred, "His name is Qi Tongwei, he's a low-ranking policeman in the city bureau, incredibly arrogant, he's not even afraid of your brother-in-law."
So this is the living devil. No wonder he dared to arrest the wife of the deputy director of customs. He ordered Captain Luo Xiong to arrest Qi Tongwei because he received instructions from Cao Xinwei to teach Qi Tongwei a lesson. Unexpectedly, Han Weiping was fiercely protective of his own.
"Don't worry, sis, I'll make that kid pay."
"My brother still sides with his sister."
After hanging up the phone, Ding Xiangqun thought for a moment. Since open methods didn't work, he would try covert ones.
Cai Xilian sat in his office, lit a cigarette, and suddenly felt a sense of crisis. He could tell from Han Weiping's attitude that the higher-ups were probably going to take serious action against smuggling.
He thought for a moment and dialed Vice Mayor Cao Jinliang's number. "Mayor Cao, my wife was arrested by the Municipal Public Security Bureau today. Shouldn't Xinwei stop what he's been doing? Too much money can be a curse."
