Just as Death Guard was about to swing his sword at Russell, a massive burst of psionic energy struck him. This psionic lightning bolt did not hit Death Guard's body but instead struck his weapon.
The chainsaw sword grazed Russell's body as it struck.
The psionic lightning altered the trajectory of the chainsaw sword's swing, which is why it missed Russell in the first strike.
